Unrecognized Pick-Up Attempt
Purpose
To ensure children are released only to authorized individuals when the teacher does not recognize the person attempting to pick up the child. This procedure protects child safety and ensures staff follow a consistent, non-negotiable protocol.
STEP 1: Pause the Release
-
Do not release the child.
-
Keep the child with you in the classroom or designated secure area.
-
Remain calm, professional, and neutral.
STEP 2: Acknowledge the Adult (Without Confirming Release)
Use a neutral response such as:
âLet me check with the front office to confirm pick-up authorization.â
Do not:
-
Argue
-
Apologize
-
Explain policies in detail
-
Make promises about release
STEP 3: Contact Administration Immediately
-
Call the front office, Director, or Administrator right away.
-
Provide the following information:
-
Childâs full name
-
Adultâs name (as provided)
-
Relationship claimed by the adult
-
Teachers do not make authorization decisions.
STEP 4: Follow Administrative Direction
-
Administration will:
-
Verify authorization
-
Contact the parent or guardian if needed
-
Provide next steps
-
Teachers must wait for clear approval from administration before releasing the child.
STEP 5: Maintain Classroom Security
-
Do not allow the adult to:
-
Enter the classroom
-
Remove the child
-
-
Keep the child calm and engaged while verification occurs.
STEP 6: Release Only After Approval
-
Release the child only after administration confirms authorization.
-
Complete required sign-out documentation at the time of release.
If the Adult Becomes Frustrated or Upset
-
Stay calm and repeat the same statement:
âFor safety reasons, I need to wait for approval from the front office.â
-
Do not escalate the conversation.
-
Immediately update administration if behavior becomes confrontational.
Non-Negotiable Rule
If you do not recognize the adult, you do not release the child.
Authorization decisions are made by administration only.
