Outdoor Play Area Safety and Compliance
Purpose
To ensure the outdoor play area is safe, secure, and compliant with all applicable childcare regulations, providing a hazard-free environment that supports active supervision and child well-being.
Scope
This SOP applies to all childcare personnel responsible for the inspection, supervision, and maintenance of outdoor play areas.
Responsibility

Procedure
Step 1: Daily Safety Inspection
-
Conduct a visual inspection of the outdoor play areaĀ before children enter the space.
-
Remove all hazards, including but not limited to:
-
Litter and debris
-
Nails, glass, sharp objects
-
Broken equipment or loose materials
-
-
Document any hazards found and corrective actions taken.
Step 2: Visibility and Supervision
-
Ensure the outdoor play area layout allows childcare personnel toĀ clearly see all children at all times.
-
Position staff strategically to monitor:
-
Play structures
-
Climbing equipment
-
Open play zones
-
-
Report and correct any blind spots that limit supervision.
Step 3: Shade Requirements
-
Verify that shaded areas are available throughout the outdoor play area.
-
Acceptable shade sources include:
-
Trees
-
Buildings
-
Permanent or temporary shade structures
-
-
Ensure children have access to shade during outdoor play, especially during peak sun exposure hours.
Step 4: Burn Risk Prevention
-
Inspect all outdoor surfaces and equipment for heat exposure risks.

Prohibit children from using:
-
Equipment that becomes excessively hot
-
Surfaces that may cause burns
-

Test surfaces during warm weather before use.
-
Restrict access to any equipment posing a burn risk until conditions are safe.
Step 5: Water Hazard Protection

Confirm that the outdoor play area is fully protected from all water hazards, including:

Pools
-
Ditches
-
Retention ponds
-
Fish ponds
-

Ensure fencing meetsĀ local ordinance requirementsĀ to prevent child access to any water hazards located within or adjacent to the play area.
Step 6: Fencing and Security Standards

Verify that fencing or walls:
-
Are aĀ minimum of 4 feet in height
-
Are continuous with no breaks
-
-
Ensure fencing and gates:
-
Have no gaps or openings larger than 3½ inches
-
Remain secure and properly latched
-
-
Inspect the base of the fence to ensure it:
-
Remains at ground level
-
Is free from erosion or buildup
-
Prevents access by children or animals
-
Step 7: Exit Requirements
-
Confirm that the outdoor play area hasĀ at least two exits, with:

At least one exit located remotely from the building
-
-
If the outdoor play area was approved prior toĀ October 25, 2017, no additional exits are requiredĀ unless fencing is modified.

If fencing is altered or replaced:
-
The two-exit requirement must be met
-

Keep exits:

Unobstructed
-
Clearly identifiable
-
Accessible during emergencies

Failure to follow this SOP may result in licensing violations, safety risks, or disciplinary action.
