Proper Response to Child Injury or Illness

Purpose

To ensure the safety, well-being, and prompt care of children by establishing a consistent, calm, and effective response to any injury or illness that occurs while a child is in care.

Scope

This SOP applies to all staff members, substitutes, and administrators responsible for supervising children at Young Innovators Academies.


Procedure

1. Immediate Assessment

  • Stop other activities and attend to the child immediately.

  • Remain calm and reassuring to the child and surrounding children.

  • Assess the severity of the injury or illness:

    • Check responsiveness, breathing, bleeding, and visible symptoms.

    • Determine whether the situation isĀ minor,Ā moderate, orĀ serious/emergency.


2. Provide Appropriate Care

  • Minor injuries/illnessesĀ (small cuts, scrapes, mild discomfort):

    • Administer basic first aid using the classroom or facility first aid kit.

    • Follow universal precautions (gloves, hand hygiene).

  • Moderate injuries/illnessesĀ (persistent pain, fever, vomiting, swelling):

    • Provide first aid within the scope of training.

    • Notify the Director immediately.

  • Serious injuries/medical emergenciesĀ (head injury, difficulty breathing, unconsciousness, severe bleeding, seizures):

    • Call 911 immediately.

    • Begin first aid or CPR if trained and necessary.

    • A staff member must stay with the child at all times.


3. Supervision of Other Children

  • Ensure the remaining children are safely supervised.

  • Request assistance from another staff member or administrator if needed.

  • Remove other children from the immediate area if appropriate.


4. Isolation (If Illness-Related)

  • If a child shows signs of illness:

    • Escort the child to the designated isolation area.

    • Maintain visual supervision at all times.

    • Keep the child comfortable until pick-up or further medical action.


5. Notification

  • Notify the Director or Administrator as soon as possible.

  • Contact the child’s parent or legal guardian promptly:

    • Clearly explain what occurred, the care provided, and next steps.

  • In emergencies, parents must be notified immediately after emergency services are contacted.


6. Documentation

  • Complete anĀ Incident/Injury or Illness ReportĀ on the same day.

  • Include:

    • Child’s name and date

    • Time and location of incident

    • Description of injury or symptoms

    • Care provided and by whom

    • Notifications made (Director, parent, emergency services)

  • Obtain parent/guardian signature when required.

  • File documentation according to recordkeeping procedures.


7. Follow-Up

  • Monitor the child for changes in condition until pick-up or return to normal activity.

  • Review the incident with administration to determine if:

    • Environmental hazards need correction

    • Additional staff training is required

    • Preventive measures should be implemented


Staff Training & Compliance

  • All staff must maintain current First Aid and CPR certification as required.

  • Staff must demonstrate understanding of this SOP through training, discussion, or walkthroughs.

  • Failure to follow this procedure may result in corrective action.

Children’s safety comes first. Calm response, immediate care, clear communication, and accurate documentation are non-negotiable expectations.
