Effective Date: [Insert Date]
Approved By: [Director’s Name]

🎯 Purpose

To ensure the safety of all children and staff through regular, well-executed fire drills that prepare the school community to respond calmly and effectively in the event of an emergency evacuation.

📌 Scope

This SOP applies to all staff, including teachers, assistants, administrators, and substitutes, across all classrooms and age groups.

📅 Frequency

  • Fire drills must be conducted at least once per month, as required by state licensing and local fire code.

  • Drills must be documented and available for inspection.

🛠️ Procedures

1. Pre-Drill Preparation

  • Inform staff of the planned drill date (unless conducting a surprise drill to test readiness).

  • Review evacuation routes and classroom exit procedures with staff.

  • Ensure exit paths and emergency exits are clear of obstruction.

  • Check that emergency supplies (clipboards, rosters, first aid kits) are readily available.

2. During the Drill

  • Activate the fire alarm manually or via drill system.

  • Teachers immediately:

    • Instruct children to line up quickly and calmly

    • Grab emergency evacuation folder (roster, emergency contacts)

    • Lead children to the designated outdoor assembly area

    • Conduct a head count and name check once outside

  • Directors or designated safety officers sweep classrooms, bathrooms, and hallways to ensure all areas are clear.

3. Post-Drill Accountability

  • Once all classes are assembled, conduct a final center-wide attendance check.

  • Confirm the evacuation time (goal: under 3 minutes for most facilities).

  • Notify all classrooms when it is safe to return inside.

4. Documentation

  • Complete a Fire Drill Record Form including:

    • Date and time of drill

    • Number of children and staff evacuated

    • Total time to evacuate

    • Notes on issues or needed improvements

  • File records in the emergency drill log and make available for licensing inspections.

5. Staff and Child Support

  • Talk to children about fire drills in advance using developmentally appropriate language.

  • Reassure nervous children and reinforce safety routines.

  • Provide training or coaching for staff who do not follow procedures correctly.

✅ Success Indicators

  • All children and staff evacuate the building in a calm, orderly manner within target time.

  • Attendance is accurately confirmed before and after the drill.

  • All staff follow roles and responsibilities without confusion.

  • Drill documentation is complete and compliant with licensing standards.
