SOP: Universal Precautions and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Purpose
The purpose of this SOP is to protect the health and safety of children, families, and staff by minimizing the risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other potentially infectious materials through the consistent application of Universal Precautions and the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
Scope
This SOP applies to all employees, administrators, substitutes, volunteers, and any individual performing duties on behalf of YIA Schools.
Policy Statement
YIA Schools requires all employees to strictly adhere to Universal Precautions at all times when there is potential contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials. Universal Precautions are based on the assumption that all blood and certain bodily fluids are potentially infectious, regardless of a personâs known medical condition. These practices are essential to maintaining proper hygiene and a safe learning environment.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
YIA Schools provides personal protective equipment for employee use, including disposable vinyl or latex gloves in a variety of sizes and CPR protective barrier devices. Employees may obtain PPE from the Director and are responsible for ensuring that appropriate PPE is readily accessible in their immediate work area at all times. When traveling outside of the classroom or during transitions, employees are required to carry the designated First Aid Bag or Hip Pack on their person.
Use of PPE
Employees are required to use PPE in every situation where exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials is anticipated. PPE must be used correctly and only for its intended purpose in accordance with this SOP and all related safety procedures. PPE must be disposed of properly after use. Failure to appropriately use PPE at any time is considered a serious safety violation and may result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.
Training Requirements
All employees are required to complete annual Bloodborne Pathogens and Universal Precautions training. YIA Schools will provide the required training and notify employees in writing of the scheduled date and time. Attendance is mandatory. Failure to attend required training sessions may result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.
Compliance and Enforcement
Strict compliance with this SOP is mandatory. Failure to follow Universal Precautions, misuse or non-use of PPE, or failure to attend required training may result in corrective action, up to and including termination, in accordance with YIA Schoolsâ disciplinary policies.
