Emergency Kit Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)

Purpose

To ensure the safety, preparedness, and continuity of care for children and staff during emergencies such as evacuations, lockdowns, shelter-in-place events, severe weather, or other unexpected incidents.

Scope

This SOP applies to all classrooms, outdoor play areas, and staff responsible for children at Young Innovators Academies.


Emergency Kit Requirements

Each classroom and designated evacuation area must haveĀ immediate accessĀ to a fully stocked emergency kit. Kits must beĀ portable, clearly labeled, and stored in an easily accessible location.


Required Contents of Emergency Kit

1. Child & Staff Information

  • CurrentĀ class rosterĀ with:

    • Child names

    • Emergency contact information

    • Authorized pickup persons

  • Attendance sheet or sign-in/out record

  • Emergency contact list for:

    • Administration

    • Emergency services

    • Licensing authority (if required)


2. First Aid & Health Supplies

  • Fully stocked first aid kit including:

    • Disposable gloves

    • Bandages (assorted sizes)

    • Gauze pads

    • Antiseptic wipes

    • Digital thermometer

  • AnyĀ required emergency medical suppliesĀ for children (as authorized and documented)

  • Face masks (child and adult sizes, if applicable)


3. Sanitation & Hygiene Supplies

  • Hand sanitizer

  • Disinfectant wipes

  • Tissues

  • Disposable paper towels

  • Diapers and wipes (for infant and toddler classrooms)

  • Plastic bags for waste or contaminated items


4. Emergency Care & Comfort Items

  • Bottled water (enough for children and staff)

  • Non-perishable snacks (if appropriate and allergy-aware)

  • Emergency blankets

  • Small comfort items for children (e.g., soft toys, books)


5. Safety & Communication Tools

  • Flashlight with working batteries

  • Whistle (for signaling during evacuation)

  • Battery-powered or hand-crank radio (if applicable)

  • Charged emergency phone or backup battery pack

  • Notepad and pen


6. Evacuation & Shelter Supplies

  • Class identification sign or card

  • Map of evacuation routes and designated meeting points

  • Copies of emergency procedures:

    • Evacuation

    • Lockdown

    • Shelter-in-place

    • Missing child protocol


Maintenance & Inspection

  • Emergency kits must be:

    • CheckedĀ monthly

    • Restocked immediately after use

  • Expired items (food, water, medical supplies) must be replaced promptly.

  • Directors are responsible for documenting emergency kit inspections.


Staff Responsibilities

  • Staff must know:

    • The location of their classroom emergency kit

    • How to transport the kit during an evacuation

  • During an emergency, theĀ lead teacherĀ is responsible for bringing the emergency kit unless otherwise directed.


Compliance

Failure to maintain a complete and accessible emergency kit may result in corrective action and poses a safety and licensing risk.
