Gossip in the Workplace
1. Purpose
The purpose of this SOP is to establish clear expectations for professional communication and to explicitly prohibit gossip in the workplace. A respectful, positive, and collaborative environment is essential to the mission of Young Innovators Academies and directly impacts the well-being of children, families, and staff.
2. Scope
This SOP applies to all employees, administrators, substitutes, volunteers, interns, and contractors of Young Innovators Academies. It applies to all forms of communication, including but not limited to in-person conversations, written correspondence, electronic messaging, and social media when representing or impacting the organization.
3. Definition of Gossip
For the purposes of this SOP, gossip includes, but is not limited to:

Sharing unverified, misleading, or confidential information

Speaking negatively about colleagues, families, children, or leadership when they are not present

Spreading rumors, assumptions, or personal opinions that undermine trust or professional relationships

Discussing workplace concerns with individuals who are not part of the appropriate resolution or reporting process
4. Policy Statement
Gossip is strictly prohibited at Young Innovators Academies.
All employees are expected to communicate in a respectful, professional, and constructive manner at all times. Any communication that undermines morale, damages trust, or disrupts a positive work environment is unacceptable and will be addressed promptly and consistently.
5. Employee Expectations
All staff members are required to:

Address concerns directly and respectfully with the individual involved when appropriate

Use proper reporting and escalation channels for unresolved issues, including supervisors or the Director

Maintain confidentiality regarding staff, children, families, and organizational matters

Demonstrate professionalism, kindness, empathy, and integrity in all workplace interactions
6. Reporting and Resolution
Employees who experience or observe gossip are encouraged to report concerns through appropriate channels, including:

Immediate Supervisor

Director or Administrative Leadership
All reports will be handled in accordance with theĀ Problem Resolution ProcedureĀ outlined in the Staff Handbook. Retaliation against any employee who reports concerns in good faith is strictly prohibited.
7. Corrective and Disciplinary Action
Violations of this SOP will be addressed through progressive discipline as outlined in theĀ Problem Resolution Procedure. Disciplinary action will be based on the severity, frequency, and impact of the behavior and may include:

Verbal or written coaching

Formal written warnings

Suspension

Termination of employment
8. Compliance and Accountability
All employees are responsible for understanding and complying with this SOP. Failure to adhere to this policy may result in disciplinary action. Directors and supervisors are responsible for modeling professional communication, reinforcing expectations, and enforcing this SOP consistently and fairly.
