Electrical Outlet Safety SOP
Purpose
To prevent electrical injuries by ensuring all accessible electrical outlets are protected against tampering by children.
Scope
This procedure applies to all classrooms, common areas, hallways, offices, and any space accessible to children within the facility.
Policy Statement
All accessible electrical outlets must be protected to prevent children from inserting objects into receptacles. Protection must meet one of the following standards:

Tamper-resistant electrical outlets, or
-
Approved safety outlet covers when tamper-resistant outlets are not installed.
Definitions

Accessible Outlet:Â Any electrical outlet located within reach of children.

Tamper-Resistant Electrical Outlet (TR):Â An outlet with internal shutter mechanisms that block foreign objects unless equal pressure is applied simultaneously.
Procedure
Step 1: Assessment

Conduct a walkthrough of the facility to identify all accessible electrical outlets.

Determine whether each outlet is tamper-resistant.
Step 2: Compliance Method

If the outlet is tamper-resistant, no additional action is required.

If the outlet is not tamper-resistant, install an approved safety outlet cover immediately.
Step 3: Installation

Ensure outlet covers fit securely and cannot be easily removed by children.

Do not use damaged, loose, or ill-fitting covers.
Step 4: Ongoing Monitoring

Staff must visually check outlet covers during daily classroom safety checks.

Any missing, damaged, or loose covers must be replaced immediately.
Step 5: Maintenance & Upgrades

When electrical work or renovations are performed, tamper-resistant outlets must be installed in all child-accessible areas.

Report non-compliant outlets to administration for corrective action.
Staff Responsibilities

Teaching staff: Monitor classroom outlets daily and report hazards.

Administration: Ensure facility-wide compliance and coordinate repairs or upgrades.
Compliance
Failure to follow this SOP may result in corrective action and may place the facility at risk of licensing violations.
