Gossip is defined as:

  • Spreading unverified, personal, or sensitive information about others

  • Speaking negatively about colleagues, families, or leadership behind their backs

  • Creating or contributing to drama, cliques, or tension within the team

  • Gossip is not tolerated in the workplace.

  • All employees are expected to communicate professionally and respectfully.

  • Concerns about coworkers or policies should be shared with a supervisor, not other staff.

1. Observe and Document

  • If a director or lead becomes aware of gossiping behavior, document the:

    • Date and time

    • Location and context

    • People involved

    • Specific content or impact (if known)

2. Initial Private Conversation

  • Speak privately with the staff member involved.

  • Use a calm, non-accusatory tone. Example:
    ā€œI wanted to check in with you about a concern that’s been brought to my attention regarding team conversations.ā€

  • Remind the employee of the center’s professional communication policy.

  • Clarify that all concerns should be directed to leadership, not shared among peers.

3. Set Clear Expectations

  • Reiterate that gossiping damages trust and team culture.

  • Ask the staff member to stop the behavior immediately.

  • Offer support for addressing any legitimate concerns through proper channels.

4. Monitor Behavior

  • Continue to observe the staff member’s conduct over the following weeks.

  • Check in regularly and document improvement or repeated behavior.

5. Escalate if Needed

If gossip continues after a verbal warning:

  • Issue a written warning with specific examples.

  • Outline the consequences for continued behavior (e.g., probation or termination).

  • Provide support resources (coaching, mediation, or professional development if needed).

6. Promote a Positive Culture

  • Model respectful communication and professionalism as leadership.

  • Encourage open dialogue, team-building, and inclusive communication norms.
