Indoor Equipment & Furnishings SOP
Purpose
To ensure all indoor equipment, materials, furnishings, and play areas are safe, sanitary, developmentally appropriate, and arranged to allow direct supervision of children at all times.
Scope
This SOP applies to all child care personnel responsible for setting up, maintaining, cleaning, and supervising indoor environments within the facility.
Regulatory Reference
Equipment safety standards and recalls shall be monitored through theĀ Consumer Product Safety CommissionĀ (CPSC).
General Safety Requirements

All equipment, materials, furnishings, toys, and play areas must be:

Sturdy, safe, and in good repair
-
Free from visible soil
-
Clean and appropriate for the location and intended users
-

Walls, ceilings, floors, furnishings, equipment, toys, and other surfaces must be:
-
Maintained in good repair
-
Suitable for childrenās use
-
Free from hazards
-

Equipment and furnishings must be arranged to:
-
AllowĀ direct supervisionĀ of children from all areas of the room
-
Prevent blind spots or obstructed views
-
-
Heavy furnishings such as:
-
Bookshelves
-
Televisions
-
Storage units
must beĀ stable and securely anchoredĀ to prevent tipping or falling.

To prevent climbing hazards:
-
Chairs and movable furnishings must be placed away from cabinets, shelves, and other elevated surfaces
-
Hazardous items must remain inaccessible to children at all times
-

The program must make reasonable environmental and scheduling accommodations to ensure children with special needs can fully participate.
A. Age-Appropriate Equipment

The facility must provide toys, equipment, and furnishings:

Suitable to each childās age and developmental level
-
In sufficient quantity so children can be actively engaged without overcrowding or conflict

B. Cleaning, Sanitizing & Disinfecting

All toys, equipment, furnishings, and play areas must be:

Safe
-
Maintained in a sanitary condition
-
Cleaned according to aĀ written routine schedule

Items exposed to bodily fluids (including saliva) must be:

Cleaned and sanitized or disinfectedĀ immediatelyĀ orĀ before reuse by another child

The facility must maintain aĀ written cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting scheduleĀ that includes:

Items cleaned daily

C. Seating Requirements

Facilities must provideĀ age-appropriate seatingĀ sufficient for the number of children eating meals or snacks at the same time.
D. Indoor Climbing Structures

Moveable or non-stationary indoor climbing equipmentĀ must include:

Protective padding in all landing areas
-

Permanent or stationary indoor climbing/playground equipmentĀ must meet the same installation and safety standards as outdoor playground equipment, including:

Proper installation
-
Fall protection
-
Equipment spacing
-
Surface requirements
-
E. Water Safety
-
Bathtubs, buckets, diaper pails, and any other open containers holding water must be:

Emptied immediately after use
-
Never left unattended
-
Compliance & Monitoring
-
Classroom staff are responsible for daily visual safety checks.

Directors or designees must:

Ensure cleaning schedules are followed
-
Document corrective actions when hazards are identified

Monitor recalls and safety alerts
