Removal of a Child from the Classroom

Policy & Procedure

Purpose

The purpose of this procedure is to ensure the safety, emotional well-being, and learning environment of all children while providing staff with clear guidance on how to respond when a child’s behavior becomes disruptive or unsafe.

General Expectations

Teachers are responsible for managing classroom behavior using appropriate guidance strategies. However, there may be times when a child requires additional support outside the classroom to maintain safety and learning continuity.

Removal from the classroom isĀ not disciplinary; it is a support measure used to help a child regulate and to assist staff in maintaining a safe and productive classroom environment.

Procedure for Classroom Removal (Non-Emergency)

  1. Requesting Support

    • If a child is experiencing continual disruptions that cannot be resolved with classroom strategies, the teacher may request assistance.

    • Before removing a child from the classroom, staff must call the front office and speak directly with theĀ Director and/or Assistant DirectorĀ to request approval and support.

  2. Office Support

    • Once approved, the Director and/or Assistant Director will assist the child with calming strategies and/or provide guidance to help staff manage the classroom situation.

    • The goal is to support emotional regulation, not to punish the child.

  3. Ongoing Behavior Concerns

    • If a child’s behavior becomes aĀ consistent disruption, it is the teacher’s responsibility to formally communicate concerns to the Director.

    • Documentation and observations may be reviewed as part of this process.

Parent Communication & Intervention

  1. Director Review

    • After reviewing the situation, if the Director determines that parent involvement is necessary, a conference will be scheduled.

    • The conference will include theĀ Director, teacher, and parent(s).

  2. Action Planning

    • During the conference, the team will discuss concerns and develop an appropriate course of action, which may include:

      • Schedule adjustments

      • Classroom placement changes

      • Additional staff training or support

      • A formal behavior or action plan

  3. Enrollment Decisions

    • If parents do not agree with or support the recommended course of action, the Director reserves the right to determine whether continued enrollment is appropriate.

    • Disenrollment decisions are made at the Director’s discretion and in the best interest of the child, classroom, and school community.

Emergency Situations (Immediate Safety Risk)

  • If a child becomesĀ out of control and poses a danger to themselves or others, the teacher must:

    1. Ensure immediate safety of all children.

    2. Call the front office immediatelyĀ and request urgent assistance.

    3. Follow all emergency and safety protocols as directed by administration.

Administrative staff will respond promptly to manage the situation and provide necessary support.

Key Reminder

Teachers shouldĀ never remove a child from the classroom without notifying and receiving direction from the Director or Assistant Director, except in immediate safety emergencies.
