First Aid Kits & Emergency Medical Supplies – Location and Access

Purpose

To ensure all staff can immediately locate and access first aid kits and emergency medical supplies to respond quickly and effectively to injuries or medical emergencies, maintaining child safety and licensing compliance at all times.

Scope

This SOP applies to all staff, substitutes, volunteers, and administrators at Young Innovators Academies.

Policy Statement

First aid kits and emergency medical supplies must be readily available, clearly labeled, properly stocked, and accessible to staff at all times. All staff are required to know the exact locations of these supplies within their assigned areas.

Approved Locations

First aid kits and emergency medical supplies must be maintained in the following areas:

  1. Each Classroom

    • Stored in a designated, clearly labeled location

    • Out of children’s reach but immediately accessible to staff

  2. Main Office / Administrative Area

  3. Kitchen or Food Preparation Area

  4. Outdoor Playground Area

    • Stored in a weather-protected container

  5. Emergency Go-Bag

    • Used for evacuations, drills, field trips, or off-site activities

Staff Responsibilities

All staff must:

  • Know the exact location of the nearest first aid kit in their assigned area

  • Access supplies without leaving children unsupervised

  • Understand which supplies are intended for:

    • Minor injuries (cuts, scrapes, minor incidents)

    • Emergency response

  • Know where to locate:

    • Disposable gloves

    • CPR masks

    • Biohazard cleanup materials

Maintenance & Inspection

  • First aid kits must be:

    • Fully stocked

    • Clearly labeled

    • Free of expired or damaged supplies

  • Inspections occur:

    • Monthly

    • Immediately after any use

  • Any missing, expired, or damaged supplies must be reported to administration immediately for replacement.

Training & Compliance

  • During onboarding and annual safety training, staff must:

    • Physically locate all required first aid kits

    • Review proper use of emergency medical supplies

    • Demonstrate understanding through walkthrough or discussion

  • Failure to follow this SOP may result in corrective action, as it directly impacts child safety and regulatory compliance.
