Bloodborne Pathogens SOP

Purpose

This policy outlines the procedures and responsibilities of employees to minimize the risk of exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens (BBPs) and Other Potentially Infectious Materials (OPIM) in the workplace. All employees who may reasonably anticipate exposure to BBPs as part of their job duties are covered under this policy.

 

Definition of Bloodborne Pathogens (BBPs)

Bloodborne Pathogens include, but are not limited to:

  • HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus)

  • Hepatitis B (HBV)

  • Hepatitis C (HCV)

  • Syphilis

  • Herpes

These pathogens are transmitted through contact with infected human blood or OPIM, such as:

  • Semen

  • Vaginal secretions

  • Any bodily fluid visibly contaminated with blood

 

Situations That May Involve Exposure

Employees may be exposed to BBPs while:

  • Assisting with accidents involving children, staff, parents, or volunteers

  • Administering first-aid, handling nosebleeds, or aiding during illness or medical procedures

  • Diapering children or cleaning up toileting accidents

  • Handling contaminated items (e.g., soiled clothing, tissues, diapers)

  • Cleaning up broken glass or sharp objects

 

Universal Precautions

  • Treat all human blood and bodily fluids as if they are infectious.

  • Do not make assumptions based on appearance, behavior, or known medical conditions.

  • Confidentiality laws protect individuals who may carry a BBP; disclosure is not required.

 

Incident Reporting Procedures

If an employee experiences or suspects exposure:

  1. Immediately notify the Director.

  2. Complete an Exposure Control Incident Report and submit it within 1 hour of the incident.

  3. Exposure is defined as direct contact with blood or OPIM, or compromised personal protective equipment (e.g., torn gloves).

🔴 Failure to report exposure or submit documentation may result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination.

 

Post-Exposure Protocol

Within 24 hours of a reported incident, Young Innovators Academies will provide at no cost to the employee:

  • Medical evaluation by a licensed provider

  • Laboratory testing, including blood tests

  • Hepatitis B vaccination (if not already vaccinated)

Employees have the right to decline services but must complete an Exposure Control Consent Form documenting their decision.

 

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

The following PPE is provided:

  • Vinyl/latex gloves (various sizes)

  • CPR face shields

Employee Requirements:

  • PPE must be readily available at all times.

  • Carry First-Aid Bag/Hip Pack when outside the classroom.

  • Use PPE properly during all tasks involving potential exposure.

🔴 Improper use or failure to use PPE will result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination.

 

Training Requirements

  • Annual Bloodborne Pathogens & Universal Precautions Training is mandatory.

  • Employees will be notified in writing of training dates.

  • Attendance is required; failure to attend may result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination.
