Emergency hospitalization

Emergency Hospitalization or Emergency Treatment SOP

Young Innovators Academies

Purpose

To ensure timely and appropriate response when a child requires emergency medical treatment while under our care.

 

1. Immediate Response

  • If a child is seriously injured or requires immediate medical care:

    • The Director will call 911 and follow the emergency operator’s instructions.

    • If the Director is unavailable, the staff member who witnessed the incident must:

      • Call 911 immediately.

      • Remain with the child and provide care as instructed by the dispatcher.

 

2. Parent and Emergency Contact Notification

  • The Director will attempt to contact the parent(s) at all phone numbers provided.

  • If the Director is not available, a designated staff member will contact the parents.

  • If parents are unreachable:

    • Staff will contact individuals listed as emergency contacts or authorized pick-up persons on the Emergency Contact & Parental Consent Form.

 

3. Supervision of the Child

  • Injured or ill children will be brought to the Director’s or Assistant Director’s office for supervision.

  • A staff member must stay with the child until the parent or emergency contact arrives.

  • If the child needs to be transported to the hospital and the parent has not yet arrived:

    • A staff member (preferably the Director or the person who witnessed the incident) will accompany the child in the ambulance if permitted by emergency responders.

 

4. Documentation

  • The staff member who witnessed the emergency must:

    • Complete an Incident Report immediately after the situation is under control.

    • Include:

      • Time of incident

      • Nature of emergency

      • Actions taken

      • Time 911 was called

      • Time parents/emergency contacts were notified

      • Follow-up steps taken

 

5. Parent Responsibility

  • Parents are required to complete and regularly update the Emergency Contact & Parental Consent Form.

  • This form must include:

    • Parent contact information

    • At least two emergency contacts

    • Authorization for emergency medical treatment and hospital
