Isolation Area SOP

Purpose

To ensure that any child who becomes ill while in care is safely separated from other children, properly supervised, and cared for in a sanitary and controlled environment until they can be picked up by a parent or guardian.

Scope

This SOP applies to all childcare personnel responsible for supervising children and responding to illness during operating hours.

Policy

Each facility must maintain a designated isolation area that meets health, safety, and supervision requirements for children who become ill while in care.

Procedure

1. Designated Isolation Area

  • The facility must have a clearly identified isolation area reserved for children who become ill while in care.

  • The isolation area must not be used for regular classroom activities, napping, or play.

2. Environmental Requirements

The isolation area must:

  • Be adequately ventilated

  • Be properly heated and cooled

  • Provide a quiet, calm space suitable for resting

The area must be equipped with:

  • A bed, mat, or cot

  • Only materials and furnishings that are non-porous or easily cleaned and sanitized or disinfected

3. Linen and Bedding Management

  • Clean linens must be used for each child.

  • Linens must be changed after every use.

  • Used linens must be placed immediately in a closed container within the isolation area until laundered.

  • Linens must not be shared between children.

4. Disposable Items

  • Disposable items (such as tissues, gloves, wipes, or paper towels) must be placed in a closed container within the isolation area.

  • Disposable waste must be removed and discarded according to the facility’s sanitation procedures.

5. Supervision and Observation

  • The isolated child must remain within sight and hearing of childcare personnel at all times.

  • The child must be continuously monitored for signs of worsening illness or distress.

  • Staff must be prepared to respond immediately if the child’s condition deteriorates.

6. Sanitation After Use

  • After the child leaves the isolation area, all surfaces, bedding, and equipment must be cleaned and sanitized or disinfected according to the facility’s cleaning and illness response protocols.

Compliance

Failure to maintain or properly use the isolation area may result in licensing violations and increased health risks to children and staff.
