Rooms Occupied by Children: Lighting, Windows, Temperature & Ventilation

. Purpose

To ensure all rooms occupied by children provide a safe, comfortable, and well-supervised environment by maintaining proper lighting, window screening, temperature control, and ventilation.

2. Scope

This SOP applies to all classrooms, activity rooms, nap areas, and any indoor space regularly occupied by children within the childcare facility.

3. Responsibility

  • Director / Administrator: Overall compliance and monitoring

  • Teaching Staff: Daily observation and reporting concerns

  • Maintenance Personnel: Repairs, adjustments, and system upkeep

4. Procedures

4.1 Lighting Requirements

4.1.1 General Lighting

  1. Ensure all rooms occupied by children are equipped with lighting that provides adequate illumination and visual comfort.

  2. Maintain a minimum illumination level of 20 foot-candles throughout all activity areas.

  3. Verify lighting allows:

    • Continuous visual supervision of children

    • Safe movement within the room

    • Safe entry and exit during all operating hours

4.1.2 Task and Close-Work Lighting

  1. Identify areas used for:

    • Reading

    • Homework

    • Painting

    • Writing

    • Arts and crafts

  2. Provide a minimum of 50 foot-candles of light at the work surface in these areas.

  3. Adjust task lighting as needed to prevent eye strain and ensure safety.

4.1.3 Naptime Lighting

  1. Reduce lighting levels during naptime to create a calm environment.

  2. Ensure lighting remains sufficient for staff to:

    • Visually observe each child

    • Maintain continuous supervision

    • Respond immediately to any child needs

4.2 Windows and Screens

4.2.1 Screen Requirements

  1. When windows or doors are opened for ventilation or airflow (not solely for entering or exiting):

    • Ensure properly fitted screens are in place.

  2. Screens must:

    • Be securely installed

    • Be free from holes or damage

    • Prevent entry of insects and rodents

4.2.2 Exemptions

  1. Screens are not required for:

    • Open-air classrooms

    • Outdoor picnic or learning areas

4.3 Temperature Control

4.3.1 Indoor Temperature Standards

  1. Maintain indoor temperatures between 65°F and 82°F at all times.

  2. Monitor temperatures regularly during operating hours.

  3. Take corrective action immediately if temperatures fall outside the required range.

4.4 Ventilation

4.4.1 General Ventilation

  1. Ensure adequate ventilation in all rooms occupied by children.

  2. Confirm that airflow prevents the buildup of odors, heat, and airborne contaminants.

4.4.2 High-Risk Areas

  1. Pay special attention to ventilation in:

    • Arts and crafts areas

    • Areas where cleaning, sanitizing, or disinfecting occurs

  2. During these activities:

    • Increase ventilation as needed

    • Use exhaust fans, open screened windows, or mechanical systems

4.4.3 Safety During Cleaning

  1. Ensure children are not exposed to harmful or potentially toxic fumes.

  2. Use ventilation to reduce inhalation risks for both children and staff.

5. Monitoring & Compliance

  • Conduct routine environmental checks.

  • Document and report any deficiencies.

  • Address lighting, temperature, or ventilation issues immediately.

6. Corrective Action

  • Repair or replace lighting fixtures as needed.

  • Install or repair window screens promptly.

  • Adjust HVAC or ventilation systems when standards are not met.
