Evacuation Routes & Designated Emergency Meeting Points SOP

Purpose

To ensure the safe, orderly, and timely evacuation of children, staff, and visitors during an emergency by clearly identifying evacuation routes and designated emergency meeting points and ensuring all personnel understand and follow these procedures.

Scope

This SOP applies to all staff members, substitutes, volunteers, and administrators at Young Innovators Academies and must be followed during all emergency evacuations, including fire, gas leaks, structural concerns, or any situation requiring immediate exit from the building.

Evacuation Routes

  1. Evacuation routes are posted inĀ every classroom and common area, displayed at child and adult eye level.

  2. Routes clearly identify:

    • Primary exit

    • Secondary (alternate) exit

  3. Evacuation routes must remain:

    • Free of obstructions at all times

    • Clearly visible and not covered or removed

  4. Staff must familiarize themselves with:

    • Routes for their assigned classroom

    • Routes for adjacent classrooms in case assistance is needed

  5. Elevators areĀ neverĀ used during an evacuation.

Designated Emergency Meeting Points

  1. Designated emergency meeting points are:

    • Located a safe distance from the building

    • Away from traffic, utilities, and potential hazards

  2. Each classroom has an assigned meeting point.

  3. Meeting points are used to:

    • Conduct immediate headcounts

    • Verify attendance using classroom rosters

    • Maintain group supervision until further instruction

  4. Children must remain with their assigned staff at all times during the emergency.

Staff Responsibilities

  • Teachers and Classroom Staff

    • Lead children calmly along the evacuation route

    • Carry the attendance roster and emergency contact information

    • Conduct headcounts upon arrival at the meeting point

    • Report any missing or injured child immediately

  • Director or Designee

    • Confirm all classrooms have evacuated

    • Coordinate communication with emergency responders

    • Determine when it is safe to re-enter or relocate

Training & Drills

  1. All staff receive training on evacuation routes and meeting points during onboarding.

  2. Fire and emergency drills are conducted regularly per licensing requirements.

  3. Staff must demonstrate understanding through:

    • Walkthroughs

    • Drill participation

    • Verbal review when requested

Compliance & Review

  • Failure to follow evacuation procedures may result in corrective action.

  • Evacuation routes and meeting points are reviewed:

    • Annually

    • When room layouts change

    • After any emergency event
