Developing rapport

To establish clear guidelines for building positive, trusting, and respectful relationships between educators and children that support social-emotional development, behavior guidance, and a nurturing classroom environment.

Scope:

This SOP applies to all lead teachers, assistant teachers, and support staff interacting with children in Young Innovators Academy classrooms.

Core Principles:

  • Relationships are the foundation of learning.

  • Every interaction is an opportunity to build trust and connection.

  • Consistency, responsiveness, and emotional availability foster rapport.

Procedure:

1. Warm Welcomes and Personal Greetings

  • Greet each child by name upon arrival with eye contact and a smile.

  • Use positive, friendly body language.

  • Offer age-appropriate physical contact (e.g., high-five, hug, or gentle pat) based on the child’s comfort level.

2. Intentional Time Together

  • Spend one-on-one time with each child daily, even if brief.

  • Sit at their level during interactions and play.

  • Show genuine interest in the child’s thoughts, questions, and creations.

3. Respectful Communication

  • Use children’s names often.

  • Use warm, calm, and respectful tone at all times.

  • Acknowledge feelings with validating language (e.g., “You seem really excited about that!” or “It looks like you’re feeling sad right now.”)

4. Observe and Learn About Each Child

  • Learn each child’s interests, temperament, and background.

  • Use observations to tailor interactions and support.

  • Keep informal notes in anecdotal records to build individual learning and behavior plans.

5. Consistent Routines and Predictability

  • Follow daily routines consistently to create a sense of safety.

  • Prepare children for transitions using visual schedules or verbal warnings.

  • Reinforce classroom rules with compassion and clarity.

6. Positive Reinforcement

  • Offer specific praise for positive behaviors and efforts.

  • Encourage self-regulation by highlighting problem-solving and cooperative behaviors.

7. Model Empathy and Respect

  • Demonstrate respectful interactions with other adults and children.

  • Share stories, books, and activities that promote kindness, inclusion, and community.
