Sun Safety and Sunscreen SOP

Purpose

To protect children and staff from harmful sun exposure by implementing safe, developmentally appropriate sun safety practices, including the proper use of sunscreen, protective clothing, and shade.

Scope

This SOP applies to all child care personnel and all children in care during outdoor activities, field trips, and any time children may be exposed to direct sunlight.

Policy Statement

Child care personnel are responsible for ensuring sun safety for themselves and all children in care. Sun protection measures must be consistently implemented to reduce the risk of sunburn, heat-related illness, and long-term skin damage.

Procedure

1. Sun Exposure Prevention

  • Outdoor activities should be scheduled, when possible, to avoid peak sun intensity hours.

  • Shaded areas must be utilized during outdoor play.

  • Children and staff are encouraged to wear protective clothing such as hats, lightweight long sleeves, and sunglasses (if appropriate).

2. Infant Sun Safety

  • Infants under six (6) months of age must be kept out of direct sunlight whenever possible.

  • Shade, stroller canopies, and covered outdoor areas must be used to protect infants.

  • Sunscreen is not recommended for infants under six months unless specifically directed by a physician and documented in writing.

3. Sunscreen Authorization

  • Sunscreen may only be applied with written parental permission.

  • The authorization must:

    • Be signed and dated by the parent or legal guardian

    • Specify the sunscreen brand and SPF, if required

    • Be kept on file and available for licensing review

4. Sunscreen Application Guidelines

  • Only sunscreen provided by the parent/guardian or approved by the facility may be used.

  • Sunscreen must be labeled with the child’s name.

  • Child care personnel must:

    • Follow manufacturer instructions for application amount and frequency

    • Wash hands before and after applying sunscreen

    • Avoid contact with the child’s eyes, mouth, and open skin areas

  • Sunscreen is applied as a medication-like product and must be handled accordingly.

5. Storage and Safety

  • Sunscreen must be stored out of children’s reach when not in use.

  • Expired sunscreen may not be used and must be discarded promptly.

6. Staff Sun Safety

  • Child care personnel are encouraged to model sun-safe behavior, including:

    • Wearing protective clothing and hats

    • Using sunscreen as needed

    • Seeking shade and staying hydrated

Compliance

Failure to follow this SOP may result in corrective action and may place the facility out of compliance with child care licensing regulations.
