Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)

Title: Bomb Threat Response
Applies To: All Staff and Classrooms


 

Purpose

To ensure the safety and protection of all children and staff in the event of a bomb threat, through immediate evacuation, coordinated communication, and proper emergency response protocols.


 

Procedure

1. Immediate Action Upon Bomb Threat Notification

  • Remain Calm: Do not alarm children unnecessarily.

  • Evacuate Immediately: Follow your classroom’s designated fire evacuation route unless otherwise directed by law enforcement or administration.

  • Grab Emergency Materials:

    • Red Emergency Bag (must include first aid supplies, emergency contact list, and necessary child care items).

    • Current classroom roster.

    • Personal phone (if permitted for emergency use).

2. Evacuation Location

  • Proceed with your class to the parking lot closest to the school.

  • Conduct a face-to-name check once you arrive and report to the person in charge.

3. Communication and Supervision

  • Administrative Staff:

    • Contact 911 if the call or message was not received directly from authorities.

    • Coordinate with police and fire department upon arrival.

    • Notify teachers of next steps as soon as official guidance is given.

  • Teaching Staff:

    • Maintain visual and verbal supervision of children at all times.

    • Keep children calm with songs, stories, or quiet activities if possible.

4. Timeline for Reentry or Dismissal

  • If the fire department clears the building within 1 hour, children and staff will return to the school.

  • If the building is not cleared within 1 hour, parents will be contacted to pick up their children.

  • If weather conditions are unsafe for children to remain outdoors, parents will be called immediately to pick up their children.

5. Early Pickup or Special Circumstances

  • Staff may contact parents at any time if they feel they are unable to adequately ensure a child’s safety due to behavioral or health-related concerns during the emergency.


 

Staff Responsibilities

  • Know and follow all evacuation routes and protocols.

  • Ensure red bags and updated rosters are accessible and ready at all times.

  • Report any suspicious items or behavior immediately to the front office or emergency responders.

  • Remain with children at all times until an “All Clear” or dismissal is given by the Director or emergency personnel.


 

Post-Incident Protocol

  • Complete an incident report form.

  • Attend a debrief with administration to review procedures and improve emergency preparedness.

  • Provide age-appropriate reassurance to children if needed.
