Scope
This SOP applies to all lead and assistant teachers responsible for facilitating or supporting small group learning in the classroom.
Policy Statement
Daily small group instruction is a required practice in all classrooms. It is designed to provide focused, intentional learning opportunities that are responsive to childrenās developmental stages, interests, and assessment data.
Procedure
1. Frequency and Scheduling
-
Small group instruction must occur daily as part of the classroom routine
-
Include designated small group times in the daily schedule and lesson plan
-
Groups may rotate or be repeated depending on instructional goals
2. Group Formation
-
Groupings should be flexible and fluid, changing as needed based on:
-
Developmental assessments (e.g., ASQ, GOLD)
-
Anecdotal records and observations
-
Learning style, temperament, and engagement level
-
Specific instructional goals (e.g., fine motor, literacy, problem-solving)
-
3. Instructional Focus
-
Each small group activity should have a clear objective aligned with developmental domains (e.g., language, math, social-emotional, physical)
-
Activities should be hands-on, inquiry-based, and scaffolded to support various learning levels
-
Documentation should reflect learning outcomes and child progress
4. Assistant Teacher Role
-
Assistant teachers may lead small groups under the direction of the lead teacher
-
Lead teachers must:
-
Plan and communicate group objectives
-
Model instructional strategies and guide assistant implementation
-
Provide materials and behavioral expectations in advance
-
-
Assistant teachers reinforce previously taught concepts and help monitor progress
5. Environment & Materials
-
Set up the classroom to allow uninterrupted small group time with minimal distractions
-
Prepare all materials and resources in advance
-
Utilize child interests and thematic units to increase engagement
6. Documentation & Reflection
-
Record participation, engagement, and developmental progress for each child
-
Use this data to adjust groupings, plan future activities, and share updates with families and administrators
-
Weekly lesson plans must include an outline of small group objectives and adaptations for individual children
