Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) Prevention Policy

Young Innovators Academies

Purpose:
To reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and promote safe sleep practices for infants under one year of age.

Policy Overview:
SIDS is the sudden and unexpected death of an otherwise healthy infant under the age of one, for which no cause of death is identified even after thorough investigation. While the exact cause is unknown, research has identified several sleeping practices that increase risk. In response, Young Innovators Academies enforces a strict sleep policy aligned with pediatric best practices and state licensing standards.

Safe Sleep Procedures:

All staff must follow these protocols when caring for infants under 12 months of age:

  • Back-to-Sleep Position:
Infants must always be placed on their back for every nap and nighttime sleep.

  • Rolling Exception:
If an infant independently rolls from back to stomach—and can also roll from stomach to back—it is acceptable to allow the infant to remain in that position.

  • Crib Safety:

    • No pillows, blankets, stuffed animals, or other soft objects are allowed in the crib at any time.

    • Sleep sacks or wearable blankets are permitted if approved by the director and provided by the parent.

  • Crib Usage:
Each infant will have their own designated crib. Cribs must be free of hazards and compliant with safety standards.

Medical Exceptions:

  • An alternative sleep position will only be permitted with a signed and dated physician’s note specifying:

    • The medical reason for the exception.

    • The recommended sleep position.

  • Approval must be granted by the Center Director prior to implementation.

Staff Accountability:

  • All staff members are expected to strictly follow this policy.

  • Any violation of the SIDS prevention policy will result in disciplinary action, which may include immediate termination depending on the severity of the infraction.

Training and Monitoring:

  • All infant care staff will receive annual training on SIDS prevention and safe sleep practices.

  • Supervisors and the Director will conduct routine sleep environment checks to ensure compliance.
