Uniform and Dress Code SOP

Purpose

The purpose of the Uniform and Dress Code policy is to ensure staff present aĀ professional, safe, and consistent appearanceĀ that reflects the schoolā€™s values, supports child safety, and maintains licensing compliance.

A consistent dress code reinforces trust with families, supports supervision and movement, and prevents safety hazards in the classroom.

General Appearance Expectations

All staff are expected to arriveĀ clean, well-groomed, and dressed appropriatelyĀ for working with young children.

Staff clothing must:

  • Allow full range of movement (bending, lifting, sitting on the floor)

  • Support active supervision indoors and outdoors

  • Be appropriate for a professional childcare environment at all times

Required Uniform (If Applicable)

If the school uses a uniform, staff must wear:

  • Approved school shirt (logo polo, t-shirt, or uniform top)

  • Approved bottoms (slacks, khakis, scrub pants, or other director-approved option)

  • Closed-toe shoes suitable for standing, walking, and playground supervision

Uniforms must be:

  • Clean and in good condition

  • Free from excessive wrinkles

  • Worn during all scheduled shifts unless otherwise approved

Acceptable Clothing

When uniforms are not required, acceptable attire includes:

  • Modest tops that fully cover the torso

  • Pants, slacks, or knee-length skirts

  • Comfortable closed-toe shoes with non-slip soles

Prohibited Clothing

For safety, professionalism, and compliance, the following areĀ not permitted:

  • Open-toe shoes, sandals, flip-flops, or heels

  • Short skirts, shorts, or dresses above knee length

  • Low-cut, sheer, or revealing tops

  • Clothing with offensive language, images, or messaging

  • Excessively tight, torn, or distressed clothing

  • Pajamas, leggings worn as pants (unless approved), or lounge wear

Jewelry, Hair, and Accessories

  • Jewelry must be minimal and safe (no large hoops, dangling earrings, or long necklaces)

  • Hair must be secured if it interferes with supervision or child safety

  • Nails should be kept at a safe length; artificial nails must comply with licensing requirements

  • Strong perfumes or fragrances should be avoided

Personal Hygiene

Staff are expected to maintain good hygiene, including:

  • Clean clothing daily

  • Proper grooming

  • Fresh breath and body cleanliness

Compliance and Accountability

  • Dress code compliance is reviewed during onboarding and reinforced regularly

  • Directors or designated supervisors may address dress code issues immediately

  • Repeated violations may result in documentation and corrective action
