Hot Drinks

Purpose

To prevent burns, spills, and injuries by eliminating the presence of hot beverages in areas occupied by children.

Policy Statement

Hot drinks areĀ strictly prohibitedĀ in all classrooms and child-accessible areas at Young Innovators Academies. This policy applies at all times during program hours.

Rationale

Children move quickly, explore unpredictably, and are at increased risk of injury from hot liquids. Even a momentary lapse can result in serious burns. Maintaining a hot-drink-free classroom ensures a safer learning environment and supports licensing compliance.


Prohibited Beverages

The following areĀ not allowedĀ in classrooms or child care areas:

  • Coffee (hot or warm)

  • Hot tea

  • Hot chocolate

  • Espresso or specialty hot beverages

  • Soup or broth in open containers

  • Any beverage capable of causing burns if spilled


Approved Beverage Types (Allowed)

Staff may consumeĀ only the followingĀ beverages in classrooms:

  • Cold waterĀ (recommended)

  • Cold beverages in spill-proof, sealed containers

  • Room-temperature drinksĀ that are not hazardous if spilled

All beverages must:

  • Be stored inĀ closed, spill-resistant containers

  • Be placedĀ out of children’s reach

  • Never be left unattended on low surfaces


Designated Areas for Hot Drinks

Hot beverages may only be consumed in:

  • Staff break rooms

  • Designated staff-only areas

  • Administrative officesĀ away from children

Hot drinks must never be carried through classrooms while children are present.


Staff Responsibilities

  • Ensure personal beverages comply with this SOP at all times

  • Monitor classroom environments for compliance

  • Immediately remove any prohibited beverage from child-accessible areas

  • Model safety-first behavior for children and families


Non-Compliance

Failure to comply with this policy may result in:

  • Verbal or written warnings

  • Corrective action

  • Further disciplinary measures if violations continue


Key Reminder

If it can burn a child, it does not belong in the classroom.
