Nap Time Supervision SOP

Purpose

To ensure the safety, well-being, and proper supervision of all children during nap or rest periods in accordance with childcare licensing requirements.

Scope

This procedure applies to all childcare personnel responsible for supervising children during nap or rest time.

Supervision Requirements During Nap Time

1. Primary Supervision

   • During nap time, at least one assigned childcare staff member must remain within sight and hearing of all children at all times.

   • Staff must position themselves so that every child can be visually observed and audibly monitored without obstruction.

2. Additional Staff Availability

   • Any additional childcare personnel required to meet staff-to-child ratio requirements must:

     • Remain within the building

     • Be located on the same floor as the sleeping children

     • Be immediately available to respond if summoned

   • These staff members must not engage in activities that prevent them from responding promptly to an emergency.

3. Staff Responsiveness

   • Supervising staff must continuously monitor:

     • Breathing and movement

     • Signs of distress

     • Safe sleep positioning

     • Environmental safety (temperature, lighting, noise)

4. Children Under 24 Months

   • Nap time supervision provisions do not apply to children under 24 months of age.

   • Children up to 24 months must receive direct supervision at all times, including during sleep.

   • Direct supervision includes:

     • Continuous visual observation

     • Immediate physical access

     • Staff presence within the same room

5. Emergency Preparedness

   • Supervising staff must be prepared to summon additional personnel immediately if:

     • A child experiences distress

     • A medical concern arises

     • Evacuation or emergency response is required

Failure to follow this procedure may result in corrective action and may place the childcare facility out of compliance with licensing regulations
